Angel Tree @ Prison Fellowship Ministries

Every Christmas we support the Prison Fellowship Ministries with our Angel Tree gifts for the children of prisoners. Others volunteer opportunities include leading Bible studies and in-prison seminars, assisting crime victims, mentoring at-risk youth and ex-prisoners, and providing administrative support. Carter BloodCare

Carter BloodCare is a not-for-profit organization that operates in 25 Texas counties. It is Texas’ largest blood center, providing more than 300,000 units of lifesaving blood components annually, and it is the primary provider of blood components and transfusion services for approximately 245 Texas health care facilities including our region’s children’s hospitals, central trauma centers, major cancer centers, and transplant centers. Carter BloodCare operates 19 Neighborhood Donor Centers and averages 20 community blood drives daily. To meet the blood needs of our area, 800 blood donations are required each day. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with the community blood drives, health fairs and donor sign-ups, special events, and office assistance. Crossroads Interfaith Housing

Crossroads provides long-term residential assistance for families referred to them by other agencies. In particular, they support homeless women who have encountered domestic violence and sexual assault. Crossroads also provides classes in parenting, budgeting, job searches and other necessary life skills. Volunteer opportunities include budget counseling, childcare, donations solicitation and pickup, apartment make-ready, and maintenance. Our Children’s Center at Irving

Our Children’s Center provides outpatient services to children from birth to age 18 with a wide variety of medical problems. The Center provides physical, occupational and speech therapy, and childcare services for children with diagnoses such as premature birth complications, development delays in speech or motor skills, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome and head injuries. It also provides education and support groups for parents. Volunteer opportunities include childcare, assistance with parties and special events, office support, and the Development Council. Great Days of Service

Two weekends each spring our church joins with other Irving churches to assist needy families in Irving through Great Days of Service. Volunteers work on houses of elderly or disabled persons who cannot care for their homes. Volunteers make minor repairs, scrape and paint, and do yard work and other necessary tasks. Volunteers are also needed to continue to work throughout the year on the Leadership Team to prepare for the next year. For information, contact Rod Alleman, 972-258-0346.
 

Irving Cares, Inc.

Irving Cares is a United Way Human Services Agency that provides Irving residents with temporary assistance and training to promote self-sufficiency. Assistance may include money for rent, utilities, food, prescriptions, and transportation to medical appointments. Their staff also maintains a job bank and a counselor on staff who can provide psychological help. Volunteer opportunities include working in the Food Pantry, Case Management, the Jobs Desk, administrative support, and special events. FUMC supports Irving cares at multiple levels. Individually through private donations as God's spirit moves each of us to give; at the Sunday School Class level where special collections or monies collected from sponsored events are earmarked for Irving Cares and at the Congregational level where all are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items on designated "5-Sunday months" where these items are delivered directly to Irving Cares.
 

Northgate United Methodist Church Clothes Closet

We support Northgate’s Close Closet with our monetary and clothing donations. Volunteer opportunities include helping to sort and hang the clothes every Thursday morning, and helping to give out the clothes every Saturday during August. For information, contact Barbara Cardwell, 972-252-8519.

Multiple collections are carried out through out the year designated for the Clothes Closet. New and gently used items are brought to collection points in the church Narthex for organized delivery.
 

Paul Keyes Elementary - Partners in Education

This fall our congregation will begin its fourth year as Partners in Education with our neighbors at Paul Keyes Elementary School. Volunteers are primarily needed for one-on-one tutoring and mentoring with a student each week of the school year. Other volunteers are “lunchroom buddies” who develop a relationship with a student by having lunch with him each week, and “email buddies” who are like pen-pals and communicate via email with a student to help him develop computer skills. During the school year, many children at Paul Keyes Elementary School could use a blessing of tutoring and mentoring. These are children who are having some difficulties in school. As a tutor/mentor, you will be assigned to work one-on-one with a child for just 30 minutes to an hour each week at a time that best fits your schedule. As a mentor, you can also participate as an email buddy or lunch buddy. Please seriously consider giving some of your time to this very worthwhile and rewarding outreach ministry.

Project Transformation

Project Transformation is a summer program that allows college students to work with children in neighborhoods throughout Dallas County. The students receive a stipend and living accommodations. They teach, sing, and share on a one-on-one basis with children, many of which would be considered “at risk.” It is an opportunity for these young people to get a taste of what ministry or full-time Christian service might be like. Volunteer opportunities include one-on-one reading with the children, providing a meal for the college interns or snacks for the children, sponsoring a field trip, and more. Kirkwood United Methodist Church is expanding their Project Transformation summer program to an after school program. Volunteers are needed Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 p.m., to help tutor homework activities. If you are interested please call Andrea, after 4:00 p.m., at Kirkwood UMC 972-254-4191. Again, please seriously consider giving some of our time to this new community outreach program.

Safe and caring summer and after-school programs for children and youth are provided. Leadership training, career exposure, and ministry exploration opportunities for young adults through summer and year-round service internships are provided. First United Methodist Church is sponsoring two interns this summer - Sean Grande and Melanie Pope. We will be hearing from them in the next few weeks.

Volunteers are needed for Project Transformation in the literacy component. Reading volunteers listen to children read for 30 minutes. Following, the pair engages in discussion and comprehension activities about the story. Kirkwood United Methodist is the location on Monday through Thursday from 9:30 - noon. We will need 10-15 volunteers a day.

Take this opportunity to work with youngsters who truly need help in reading and comprehension. Our assignment is to volunteer for July 17th - July 20th, 9:30 - noon each day. Beginning today, there will be a sign-up sheet in the foyer. You do NOT have to commit for all four days. Call Community Outreach Chairman Barbara Cardwell, 972-255-5721, if you have questions or to sign up. If there is no answer, leave a message. Our youth are welcome to participate and earn service hours for school.

Also on July 20th in the evening we will be responsible for a POTLUCK DINNER for approximately 75 - 100 folks. Pre-warmed casseroles, fried chicken, salads, desserts and drinks will be needed. Please sign up and use your culinary expertise, or pick up what you need at the local grocery store or drive through at a fast food restaurant. AGAIN, YOU ARE NEEDED!

Remember that Christ gave of himself for us and now it is our turn to give of ourselves in His name for those who are less fortunate. Thanks!

VNA Meals on Wheels

Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) Meals on Wheels delivers more than 2,600 nutritious hot meals to homebound ill, elderly and disabled persons in Dallas County each day. In 2002, 3,849 clients received 696,603 home-delivered meals at a cost of $4 per meal. Community support for VNA Meals on Wheels makes it possible for elderly individuals with medical conditions to continue to live at home, instead of an institutional setting.
