2008 FUMC Battle of the Bands
The first Annual Battle of the Bands and A Taste of
Irving was held at First United Methodist Church, Irving
April 19th as a feature weekend for the year long
festivities of the church’s centennial. It was just one
of the many events that are happing in honor of there
100th year as a church! Although this event is called a “battle”
it was all friendly and quite family friendly, too. There was
fun, food, music, with lots of children’s and family
activities, absolutely GREAT weather and just so much
more. All that attended had tremendous fun. It was an
awesome experience.
There were five different contemporary
Christian-music bands performing. They included;
Riptide, Cornerstone, Vertical, Crown of Thorns, Refuge
and Planning Yesterday. Our gracious sponsors providing
help and support were Murphy’s Music, McDougal
Properties and 87.9 Power FM, the Christian Rock Station crankin out non-stop contemporary Christian rock music
with the help of Little Herbie and the Powermobile.
The winner of the Battle of the Bands was to receive
a prize of specified hours in a recording studio and one
of their songs played on the radio, so you know they
were all in it to WIN! Of course, all of the bands
performed really well and sounded really great! After
hours of fine entertainment and great music, at the end
of the day the winner was chosen - Planning Yesterday!
Congratulations, Planning Yesterday! Visit their
Myspace
website. Good stuff!
We had four area restaurants participating in the
Taste of Irving. The great food was provided by
Angelo's Spaghetti & Pizza House,
Pizza Hut,
Soila's Mexican Food and Villa's Grill in downtown Irving. There was no shortage of great food.
There was no shortage of great fun either. There was
a bounce house, miniature train rides around “Ohio and
3rd Street Railway”, magic acts kept the kiddies
entertained, while other kids drew and etched with chalk
their version of Irving and favorite art on the parking
lot, sidewalks and (a great novelty to them) the closed
Ohio Street. What kid wouldn’t want to sit in
the middle of the street and write on it with chalk?

It was a blast for the whole family.
We can't wait for the next one.
