Saturday, May 3, 2008 The
United Methodist Men's Breakfast of First United Methodist
Church in Irving, TX, open to both men & women, invited Mr. Troy
Dungan as the morning’s guest speaker. We’re sure you all
remember Troy as the weather anchor from WFAA Channel 8 – yeah,
the guy with the bow ties! He is now enjoying retirement,
grandkids and an occasional speaking engagement We are very
fortunate to having him accept our request. Forty-five people in
attended this special event and enjoyed every minute of it. The
Methodist Men have an open breakfast every 1st Saturday of every
month with a great guest speaker each month.
The breakfast started with “the Big Breakfast” that always includes
plenty of Pancakes, Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon,
Biscuits and Hot Coffee. As we were
finishing the last bits of sausage and biscuits, Mr. Rob Mellott
got the morning started with a devotional about Noah. He spoke
of the storms that Noah had to deal with in his life and that we
today have storms in our own lives that we must deal with. He
then introduced Mr. Dungan and invited him to the podium.
Troy began with a few brief statements about his retirement
from Channel 8 WFAA. He would be remiss not to mention has 220
bowties. He has also begun doing TV commercials after his
thirty-one years as a television meteorologist.
After Troy’s brief intro on Life after WFAA, he began with the
main topic of his presentation, “the Three Joes”. Joseph in
Genesis
Joseph was so good his brothers didn't like him. He had dreams
that guided his life into many situations and to many places. He
did the right thing as he stayed true to God. Mr. Dungan
reminded the audience that like Joseph, we need to stay true to
God and always tell the truth. |
Jonah
Jesus Christ mentions him in His ministry. Jonah didn't want the
ministry hat God gave him so he ran other way. He was running
from God. People believed because of him being scared that made
him stronger in his ministry. Mr. Dungan suggested for the
audience to read the book, "What’s So Amazing About Grace".
Jonah just like us had trials and was tested. God gives us
several chances and God does not give up on us just like with
Jonah.. We all are going to have a Nineveh, we might as well do
it and do it cheerfully.
Joseph in New Testament
See Matthew 1:18-25. Joseph was Jesus' step-father and
that
was quite a difficult job. Joseph was
thoughtful and considerate. He was a responsible man and did
what the Angel of God said. Joseph did not “lay a hand on” Mary
until after she had given birth to Jesus. Mary was a descendant
of Nathan. Joseph had self-control. He was a man that God loved
and that all men should look up to.
Troy Dungan thanked all for being there and listening to him.
Then President of First United Methodist Men's Group—Gerald
Stanford thanked all and gave the microphone to Danny Elms. He
presented Mr. Dungan with a gift of a hand-crafted wooden cross
made by one of our own UMM men, Walter Robinson. Mr. Dungan
accepted the cross with gratitude and expressed his
appreciation. Troy will put on his wall with other crosses that
he has.
