About Our Church
From the Pastor's Point of View
For
one hundred and two years First United Methodist Church has
occupied a special place in the heart of Irving. It offers
a unique blend of traditional and contemporary worship,
education for children, youth and adults, spiritual
formation and service to our community.
As a
congregation of over 1,200, First United Methodist Church
in Irving has the strength and diversity to offer a wide
variety of opportunities for families and singles of all
ages. Our new sanctuary, completed in December of 2002, is
a landmark in Irving and a statement of our commitment to
God and to serving our neighbors.
We welcome
anyone who seeks a richer spiritual life, a different
perspective on our world or who would like an opportunity
to join with others who seek to heal the hurts and nourish
the hopes of those around us.
From the Lay Leader's Point of View
Walking in the door at First United Methodist Church,
Irving, is like going to a family reunion every Sunday
morning.
There are hugs and handshakes, breakfast casseroles and
donuts, little children, older folks and every age in
between. Most importantly, there is a heaping helping of the
Love of Jesus Christ. It's thrown together like a big ol'
pot of Grandma's stew. And it feels good--really good.
Our church family is diverse. And while some have been
members all their lives, they quickly embrace those who have
walked into the door for the very first time. Grandmas tend
to adopt young couples and love their little ones like they
were their own. There is safety. There is trust. There is
acceptance.
The church is more than just a good place to fellowship.
We go out--sometimes way out--to deliver the message of the
love of Jesus Christ to a hurting world. Food, money,
clothing and school supplies flow freely to reach the needy
in Irving. We also support missions abroad. For the last
three years, we have put "feet to our faith" and sent our
pastor and teams of members from our church on international
mission trips.
If you want meaning in your life, come. If you want to
see the hand of God reach down into your very soul and take
you to places you never imagined possible, you need to do
more than just try this church out. You need to join. We
need you. More importantly, Jesus Christ needs you. He's
counting on you. And so are we.
From a Parishioner's Point of View
My wife and I had been looking for a home church for
some time. She was visiting FUMC for a few weeks and
suggested I come with her. On first sight, the campus was
pleasing, the sanctuary was even better. It very much
reminded me of a church of my childhood, pleasant
surroundings, not pretentious, a place to worship. I felt
welcome, safe and at home.
Two things that stood out
that made me decide
to come back. One, was I shook hands with and spoke with some of the most genuinely
friendly people I've ever met. The other was it felt like
God's Spirit was here. Not just in the building but
everywhere.
It was the right place to be, the right place to go and
the right time to be there. I thank God and my wife for
bringing me to First United Methodist Irving. I invite anyone
else looking for a church home and a better way of life to come and visit and see
for yourself. You could be touched by the Spirit as I
was. We have made lasting friendships and have had some of
the best times of our lives.

Community
First United Methodist Church is located in the heart of the
newly revitalized Heritage District of downtown Irving. Shaded
by large groves of magnificent oak trees, the church
campus is within walking distance of
DART bus transit lines
and the
South Irving Transit Center for the Trinity Railway Express
terminal and one block from historic Heritage Park. Irving is
not a large urban city but shares the urban problems of
her large Metroplex neighbors. As Christ's church, we are
here to help in our community wherever and whenever we can.
We are postured to be THE church of downtown and heritage
Irving.

dedication for over five years from 1998-2003 by Laura Campbell of
FUMC. She gave of her time, of her personal resources and
of herself to keep this web site alive for the church. For
this we thank her deeply. When you see her, tell her thank
you.

Until a few FUMC church members volunteer their time and
their service as a part-time web team (to be assisted by
an information committee), Doug Pierson had done the best
he could to keep up with events and announcements. As of
April 2010 he is retired as webmaster. If you have information you would like to have published
on the web site, you can put your annotated material
